George was the son of the grieve, or overseer, of the estate of Pitodrie in Oyne Parish, Aberdeenshire, and husband of Susan Huntington Manning.
He emigrated to America with his sister in 1871.
He was educated at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and became pastor of the Old South Church, Boylston Street, Boston, Massachusetts, in 1884.
He was a lecturer in the Lowell Institute Course (1900); Lyman Beecher Lecturer, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut (1901). He also served as university preacher to Harvard (1886–90) and Yale (1888–1901), and was a Harvard overseer.
