Biography

An ir­on­mon­ger by trade, Grant worked in West Bow, Ed­in­burgh.

From 1746–52 he held se­ver­al of­fic­es in the Ed­in­burgh Town Coun­cil. To the Ed­in­burgh Or­phan Hos­pi­tal he do­nat­ed the pro­fits from the first & se­cond edi­tions of his hymns, which were pub­lished as:

• Original Hymns and Po­ems, Writ­ten by a Pri­vate Chris­tian for His Own Use, and Pub­lished at the Ear­nest De­sire of Friends (Ed­in­burgh, 1784, se­cond edi­tion 1820)
