Gray was the son of Thomas Gray and Deborah Stillman.
He graduated from Harvard College in 1823.
After visiting Europe, he earned his MD degree in 1827, and practiced medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. He subsequently moved into a career in chemistry.
His hymns were mainly written for children, and for occasional services.
