Biography

Francis was the son of Charles Grey and Ma­ry Eliz­abeth Pon­sonby, and hus­band of Eliz­abeth Dor­othy Ann Georg­ia­na How­ard.

He was edu­cat­ed at Tri­ni­ty Col­lege, Cam­bridge (MA 1834).

He was or­dained an Ang­li­can dea­con at Ro­ches­ter in 1836, and priest in 1837.

He served in a num­ber of posts:

• Curate of Ac­ton, Suf­folk (1836) and Sap­cote, Lei­ces­ter­shire (1837)
• Perpetual cur­ate of Bux­ton, Der­by­shire (1837–42)
• Rector of Mor­peth and per­pe­tu­al cur­ate of Ulg­ham, North­um­ber­land (1842–90)
• Honorary ca­non of Dur­ham (1863–82)
• Rural dean of Mor­peth (1879–90)
• Proctor for Arch­dea­con of Lin­dis­farne
• Honorary can­on and chap­lain to the Bishop of New­cas­tle (1882–90)
