Biography

Amanda was the daughter of Bryant Cartwright and Harriett Barnaby, and wife of John Alexander Griffith (married in McDonough County, Illinois). She had nine children, including twins that died the day they were born. When she was pregnant with John Archie Griffith, her husband died.

She had been a teacher earlier, and returned to that career after her husband’s death. She took her baby to school with her, and the older girls in the one room school would rock him and help care for him while she taught.

She moved from McDonough County to Denver, Colorado, about 1904.
