Grotenhuis was the husband of Eleanor Ruth Veldman.
He was educated at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Michigan State University, Lansing; and Ohio State University, Columbus.
He was a professor of music and director of choral music at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, from 1960 until retiring in 1994.
He directed the Dordt choir in many recordings, including a number of psalm arrangements found in the Christian Reformed Church’s 1959 Psalter Hymnal.
He also served on the Revision Committee for the 1987 edition of the Psalter Hymnal.
He is remembered as the composer, arranger, and harmonizer of numerous hymn tunes.
