John was the son of James Hague, a sea captain from Scarborough, England, and Anna Bayley, of New Rochelle, New York, and husband of Anna W. Brown of Boston, Massachusetts (married 1836.)
He attended Hamilton College (class of 1832) and the Newton Theological Institution (1832–35) and was ordained a Baptist minister in 1835 in Eastport, Maine.
Hague pastored in Eastport until 1845, when he left the ministry for the educational field.
He served schools in Jamaica Plain and Newton Centre, Massachusetts (1845–51); Hudson, New York (1850–70); and Hackensack, New Jersey, where he moved in 1870.
