Biography

John was the son of James Hague, a sea cap­tain from Scar­bo­rough, Eng­land, and An­na Bay­ley, of New Ro­chelle, New York, and hu­sband of An­na W. Brown of Bos­ton, Mas­sa­ch­usetts (ma­rried 1836.)

He at­tend­ed Ham­il­ton Col­lege (class of 1832) and the New­ton Theo­lo­gic­al In­sti­tu­tion (1832–35) and was or­dained a Bap­tist min­is­ter in 1835 in East­port, Maine.

Hague pas­tored in East­port un­til 1845, when he left the min­is­try for the edu­ca­tion­al field.

He served schools in Ja­mai­ca Plain and New­ton Centre, Mas­sa­chu­setts (1845–51); Hud­son, New York (1850–70); and Hack­en­sack, New Jer­sey, where he moved in 1870.
