Henry was the son of Edward Hawkes, minister of the Market Place Chapel in Kendal.
He went to Liverpool at age 16 to enter business, and joined the Renshaw Street Chapel there. In 1859, the North End Domestic Mission was established in Liverpool, and in 1871 Hawkes became its Missionary Minister, staying there 16 years.
He also served with an American Unitarian mission in Japan, at the Bootle Free Church (1891–1900), and at the West Kirby Free Church (1906–13).
