William was the son of Gilbert Heathcote (Archdeacon of Gloucester) and Ann Beadon, and husband of Elizabeth Mary Deane (married August 3, 1852).
He was educated at New College, Oxford (BCL 1840). He was for a while Fellow and Tutor at his college; Warden of Radley College (1851–52); rector of Compton Bassett, Wiltshire; precentor of Salisbury Cathedral; chaplain to the Bishop of Salisbury; and Select Preacher at Oxford.
