Donald was the husband of Frances Heins.
He studied in Leipzig, Germany, and in London. He emigrated to Canada in 1902, settling in Ottawa.
He taught music in the public schools and, starting in 1927, at the Toronto Conservatory of Music.
He was also assistant conductor for the Toronto Symphony.
