Biography

William was the son of Tho­mas Ro­bert Hew­itt and Ma­ry Eli­za­beth Cooke, and hus­band of Kath­arine Kit­ty Mark­ham (mar­ried 1928, Strat­ford up­on Av­on).

He stu­died mu­sic un­der Dr. George Ben­nett at Lin­coln Ca­thed­ral for 10 years.

During World War I, he was in the Roy­al Air Force.

Hewitt served as:

• Assistant or­gan­ist, Lin­coln Ca­thed­ral (1922–26)
• Organist, Church of the Ho­ly Tri­ni­ty, Strat­ford-up­on-Av­on (1926–33)
• Organist, St. James’ Ca­thed­ral, To­ron­to, Ca­na­da (1933–56)
• Chairman, To­ron­to Centre of the Roy­al Ca­na­di­an Col­lege of Or­gan­ists (1940–42)
