Hews began teaching music in Boston around 1830. He sang in the Handel and Haydn Society, and was its vice president (1854–58).
In 1840, he founded a piano manufacturing concern, and even obtained several piano patents, one of them called the Hews Patent American Action.
Hews also played the organ at the Brattle Street Church, and hosted meetings of the Harvard Medical Association, which made him an honorary member.
