Biography

Hews be­gan teach­ing mu­sic in Bos­ton around 1830. He sang in the Han­del and Hay­dn So­ci­e­ty, and was its vice pre­si­dent (1854–58).

In 1840, he found­ed a pi­a­no man­u­fac­tur­ing con­cern, and ev­en obtained sev­er­al pi­a­no pa­tents, one of them called the Hews Pa­tent Am­er­i­can Ac­tion.

Hews al­so played the or­gan at the Brat­tle Street Church, and host­ed meet­ings of the Har­vard Med­ic­al As­so­ci­a­tion, which made him an hon­or­a­ry mem­ber.
