Angus was the son of William Bowman Hibbard and Adaline Smith, and husband of Lucile Ray.
He was a pioneer in the early years of the American telephone industry. In 1886, he went to New York to become General Superintendent of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company.
In 1893, he became General Manager of the Chicago Telephone Company (predecessor of the Illinois Bell Telephone Company), where he served until 1911. He retired in 1915.
