Otto was the son of John S. Hirschler and Christine Schmidt, and husband of Rachael Irene Mabry (married July 12, 1924, Los Angeles, California).
He attended Pomona College, Claremont, California; the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and Arts; and the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago, Illinois.
He headed the organ and theory departments at Albion College, Michigan (1916–17); the organ department at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa (1917–19); and was head of piano, organ and theory instruction at the California Christian College, Los Angeles.
