A journalist, author, poet and lecturer, Hodges wrote a column called The Optimist for the Philadelphia North American (now the Philadelphia Inquirer).
He worked with Emily Bissell to introduce Christmas Seals to raise funds and awareness for lung diseases such as tuberculosis. The Pennsylvania State Medical Society gave him its Benjamin Rush Award in 1952.
