James was the son of Robert Hogg and Margaret Laidlaw, and husband of Margaret Phillips.
As a young man he worked as a shepherd and farm hand, and was largely self educated through reading.
A poet and novelist, Hogg wrote in Scots and English. He was a friend of many of the great writers of his day, including Walter Scott.
