Biography

James was the son of Ro­bert Hogg and Mar­ga­ret Laid­law, and hus­band of Mar­gar­et Phil­lips.

As a young man he worked as a shep­herd and farm hand, and was large­ly self edu­cat­ed through read­ing.

A po­et and no­vel­ist, Hogg wrote in Scots and Eng­lish. He was a friend of ma­ny of the great writ­ers of his day, in­clud­ing Wa­lter Scott.
