He was educated at Eton and at Balliol College, Oxford (BA 1870, MA 1873, DD Aberdeen 1903). He became Senior Student of Christ Church, Oxford, in 1870, was ordained deacon in 1872, and priest in 1874. He became canon of St. Paul’s, London, in 1884, and a Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford in 1910.

I am standing on the seashore. A ship spreads her white sails to the morning breeze & starts for the ocean. I stand watching her until she fades on the horizon, & someone at my side says, She is gone. Gone where?

The loss of sight is in me, not in her. Just at the moment when someone says, She is gone, there are others who are watching her coming. Other voices take up the glad shout, Here she comes, & that is dying.
