Holtzclaw mar­ried twice, the se­cond time to Ma­ry Lou Ne­vins Bix­ler of An­der­son Coun­ty, Ken­tuc­ky.

He was edu­cat­ed at George­town Col­lege and Ew­ing Col­lege (DD & PhD), and held pas­tor­ates in Ken­tuc­ky, In­di­ana, Il­li­nois, Mi­chi­gan, Ohio and Geor­gia.
