Hopkins was a chorister at St. Paul’s Cathedral (1831–38).
He was organist at Mitcham Parish Church (1838, succeeding his brother Edward).
He later played the organ at St. Stephen’s, Islington (1839); Trinity Church, Islington (1843); St. Mark’s, Jersey (1845); St. Michael’s, Chester Square, Belgravia (1846); and Rochester Cathedral (1854–1900) (succeeding his cousin, John Larkin Hopkins).
