John was the son of Evan Hughes, and husband of Hannah Maria David (married 1905). He is sometimes confused with the John Hughes (Landore) who wrote the tune Calon Lân.
By age 12, he was working as a door boy
in the coal mine at Llantwit Fardre, Glamorganshire. He eventually worked his way up to the position of clerk at the Great Western Colliery in Pontypridd, in Rhondda Valley.
He belonged to the Salem Baptist Chapel, where he was a deacon and precentor.
