Introduction

Biography

John was the son of Ev­an Hughes, and hus­band of Han­nah Ma­ria Dav­id (mar­ried 1905). He is some­times con­fused with the John Hughes (Lan­dore) who wrote the tune Ca­lon Lân.

By age 12, he was work­ing as a door boy in the coal mine at Llantwit Fardre, Gla­mor­gan­shire. He ev­en­tu­al­ly worked his way up to the po­si­tion of clerk at the Great West­ern Col­lier­y in Pon­ty­pridd, in Rhon­dda Val­ley.

He be­longed to the Sa­lem Bap­tist Cha­pel, where he was a dea­con and pre­cen­tor.
