Son of Ebenezer Huntington and Lydia Peck Huntington, DeWitt married twice, to Frances Harriett Davis and Mary Elizabeth Moore. He attended Syracuse University in New York, and was ordained a Methodist Episcopal minister in 1853. He pastored in Rochester, New York (1861–71 & 1876–79); Syracuse, New York (1873–76); Olean, New York (1885–89); Bradford, Pennsylvania (1882–85 & 1889–91); and Lincoln, Nebraska (1891–96). He served as chancellor of Nebraska Wesleyan University (1898–1908), and in 1908 became professor of English Bible there.
