Frederic was the son of Daniel Huntington and Elizabeth Whiting Phelps, and husband of Hannah Dane Sargent. He graduated from Amherst College in 1839, and Cambridge Divinity School in 1842. He served as a Unitarian minister in Boston, Massachusetts, until 1855, when he became Professor of Christian Morals and University Preacher at Harvard. In 1859, he was ordained an Episcopal priest; he was for some time a rector in Boston, and 1869 became Bishop of Central New York. His works include:
