Hunnicutt was the son of James Edward P. Hunnicutt and Martha Lundie Atkinson, and husband of Eliza Magruder.
A minister, he belonged to the Mississippi Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (1861–1910).
He was also Professor of Ancient Languages at Madison College, Sharon, Mississippi. William Hartwell, who wrote the music for Hunnicutt’s I’ll Rejoice, taught at the same school.
