Biography

DeWitt was the son of Eb­en­ezer Hunt­ing­ton and Ly­dia Peck. He mar­ried twice, to Fran­ces Har­ri­ett Da­vis and Ma­ry Eli­za­beth Moore.

He at­tend­ed Sy­ra­cuse Uni­ver­si­ty in New York, and was or­dained a Me­tho­dist Epis­co­pal min­is­ter in 1853.

He served pas­tor­ates in Ro­ches­ter, New York (1861–71 & 1876–79); Sy­ra­cuse, New York (1873–76); Ole­an, New York (1885–89); Brad­ford, Pen­nsy­lvan­ia (1882–85 & 1889–91); and Lin­coln, Ne­bras­ka (1891–96).

He served as chan­cel­lor of Ne­bra­ska Wes­ley­an Uni­ver­si­ty (1898–1908), and in 1908 be­came pro­fess­or of Eng­lish Bi­ble there.
