DeWitt was the son of Ebenezer Huntington and Lydia Peck. He married twice, to Frances Harriett Davis and Mary Elizabeth Moore.
He attended Syracuse University in New York, and was ordained a Methodist Episcopal minister in 1853.
He served pastorates in Rochester, New York (1861–71 & 1876–79); Syracuse, New York (1873–76); Olean, New York (1885–89); Bradford, Pennsylvania (1882–85 & 1889–91); and Lincoln, Nebraska (1891–96).
He served as chancellor of Nebraska Wesleyan University (1898–1908), and in 1908 became professor of English Bible there.
