Hyde lost both parents an early age, and grew up with relatives in Keene, New Hampshire.
He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy (1875); Harvard University (bachelor’s degree 1879); Union Theological Seminary, New York City (1879–80); and Andover Theological Seminary, Newton, Massachusetts (1882).
He was ordained a Congregational minister in 1883, and pastored in Paterson, New Jersey (1883–85). He was president of Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine (1885–1917).
