Ireland was educated at the Royal College of Music, where he studied under Charles Stanford.
He served as organist at All Saints’, Tuffnell Park (1897–99); St. Jude’s, Upper Chelsea (1899–1904); Holy Trinity, Sloane Square; and for 22 years at St. Luke’s, Upper Chelsea.
Durham awarded him an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 1932.
