Son of a tailor, Jarman was trained in his father’s trade, but his musical talent interfered with his work. He joined the choir of the Baptist chapel in Clipstone as a youth, and soon began writing hymn tunes and anthems. He was also a successful choir trainer, and spent several years at Leamington. He assembled about 16-18 musical collections, including:
