Son of a tai­lor, Jar­man was trained in his fa­ther’s trade, but his mu­sic­al tal­ent in­ter­fered with his work. He joined the choir of the Bap­tist cha­pel in Clip­stone as a youth, and soon be­gan writ­ing hymn tunes and an­thems. He was al­so a suc­cess­ful choir train­er, and spent sev­er­al years at Lea­ming­ton. He as­semb­led about 16-18 mu­sic­al col­lect­ions, in­clud­ing:
