John was the son of son of James Johnson and Helen Louise Dillet, husband of Nora Ethel Floyd, and brother of James Johnson.
He attended Atlanta University and the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, Massachusetts.
He and his brother James belonged to the song writing team of [Bob] Cole and Johnson Brothers, writing over 200 songs.
He also edited a number of collections of African-American music.
