Johnson worked for the Sal­va­tion Ar­my (SA) in Scot­land and in Lon­don.

A sing­er and vio­lin­ist, some of his songs ap­peared in the SA’s War Cry and Mu­sic­al Sal­va­tion­ist, 1882–87.
