Biography

Darius was the son of mu­si­cian Ab­ner Jones.

In 1854, he and George Webb be­came as­sist­ant ed­it­ors with Lo­well Ma­son, work­ing on the pe­ri­od­i­cal The Cho­ral Ad­vo­cate. At the time, Jones was mu­sic di­rect­or at Ply­mouth Church in Brook­lyn (John Zun­del was then or­gan­ist).

Jones lat­er ed­it­ed the Con­gre­ga­tion­al Her­ald in Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois, then gra­du­at­ed from Io­wa Col­lege and served pas­tor­ates in Co­lum­bus Ci­ty and New­ton Cen­ter, Io­wa.

In 1863, he be­came trea­sur­er of the Io­wa Ge­ne­ral As­so­cia­tion, and af­ter­ward worked for the Am­er­ican Bi­ble As­so­cia­tion.
