Biography

Edmund was the son of Phi­lip Jones of Chel­ten­ham.

He spent much of his boy­hood in Up­ton up­on Se­vern, Wor­ces­ter­shire, where his fa­ther was pas­tor of a Bap­tist church.

He at­tend­ed for a time the Bap­tist Col­lege at Bris­tol. At age 19, he be­gan to preach for the Bap­tist con­gre­ga­tion in Ex­et­er, and two years lat­er be­came its pas­tor.

It seems his church first in­tro­duced sing­ing as part of wor­ship in 1759, dur­ing his ten­ure. Ac­cord­ing to John Rip­pon, Jones al­so pas­tored at the Bap­tist church in Ex­on, De­vo­nshire.
