After a short business career, Kidner became a professional musician in 1875. Upon the death of his friend Alfred Stone, he became secretary and manager of the Bristol Music Festival, a post he held over 30 years.
During this period, he was actively engaged teaching singing classes and choirs, and conducting the Bristol Gleemen, a society he founded in 1886.
