Murray was the son of John Klepfer and Matilda Jane Murray, and husband of Ida May Wilt.
He studied at Dickinson Seminary (now Lycoming College), Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Dickinson College.
In 1884, he was ordained a deacon in the Methodist Episcopal Church, Central Pennsylvania Conference, and went on to serve pastorates in Altoona, Carlisle, Harrisburg, Milton, and other cities in Pennsylvania.
He taught briefly at Union College, Barbourville, Kentucky, and lectured for three years on the Chautauqua circuit.
