James was the son of John Le Grand Knox and Elizabeth Carter Sigourney.
He studied at St. Paul’s School, Concord, New Hampshire (1862–67), and played the organ there for over 50 years.
He received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, around 1915.
