Hermann was the son of Johann Gottfried Kotzschmar, the town Stadtmusiker, and husband of Mary Ann Torrey (married December 16, 1872).
He played the organ at the First Parish Church Unitarian Universalist, Portland, Maine (1849–1908).
He also served as a choral conductor in Portland and elsewhere in Maine.
