Henry was the son of Samuel Leonard and Cynthia Claggett; he married twice, to Anne Claggett and Adelia Leonard.

Leonard served as a chaplain of the 3rd Maine Regiment during the American civil war. At the time of his death, he was pastor of a Universalist Church in Annisquam, Massachusetts. His works include:
