Henry was the son of Gerald Lewis Henry Ley and Beatrice Emma Hayter-Hames.
He a chorister at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor; music scholar at Uppingham School; and in 1906 became an organ scholar at Keble College, Oxford.
He was also precentor of Radley College; organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford (1909–26); choragus of Oxford University; professor of organ at the Royal College of Music (1919); and organist at Eton College.
