Lighthall was the husband of Annie May O’Dell.
A Methodist, as of 1881, he lived in L’Acadie, in the St. Jean region of Québec. That same year, he moved just across the border to Rouses Point, New York, where he was educated.
He was later a station agent and telegrapher for the Delaware and Hudson Railroad for over 30 years.
Lighthall was active in the Presbyterian church, the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor, the Young Men’s Christian Association, the Odd Fellows and the Masons.
He served at least 15 years as a member and president of the Rouses Point public school board.
Lighthall had a number of poems published in the Troy, New York, Times.
