Anna was the daughter of Presbyterian minister William Young Brown and Flora Robertson, and wife of Samuel McCune Lindsay (married 1896).
She was educated at Wellesley College, Massachusetts; Oxford University, England; and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (where in 1892 she became the first woman to earn a doctorate).
She later served as a professor at Wellesley, and a trustee of the college (1906–18).
