Biography

Anna was the daugh­ter of Pres­by­ter­ian min­is­ter Will­iam Young Brown and Flo­ra Ro­bert­son, and wife of Sam­uel Mc­Cune Lind­say (mar­ried 1896).

She was edu­cat­ed at Well­es­ley Col­lege, Mas­sa­chu­setts; Ox­ford Uni­vers­ity, Eng­land; and the Uni­vers­ity of Penn­syl­van­ia, Phi­la­del­phia (where in 1892 she be­came the first wo­man to earn a doc­tor­ate).

She lat­er served as a pro­fes­sor at Well­es­ley, and a trus­tee of the col­lege (1906–18).
