Charles was the youngest child of Jacob & Elizabeth Link. In 1891, he married Clara Berkey. In 1900, they moved to Mount Vernon, South Dakota, where he lived the rest of his life.

Link was raised in the Mennonite tradition, but transferred to the Methodist Episcopal denomination after marriage. A farmer by occupation, Link relished all kinds of music, especially singing. He was a chorister and Sunday School superintendent at his Mennonite church for a number of years, as well as serving as a band leader and clarinetist. He also led and directed the choir in the Methodist church of Mt. Vernon, and helped with the singing in programs and at numerous funerals. In addition, he organized and led a number of singing schools.
