Sarah was the daughter of minister Jonathan Livermore and Elizabeth Kidder. One biography stated she was a teacher for many years, and wrote many pieces of fugitive poetry and prose.

Sarah had a deep interest in religious teaching, and organized one of the first Sunday schools in America. Her nephew was hymnist Abiel A. Livermore.
