Lockwood was a min­is­ter. His hymn Near­er was pub­lished in New York Ci­ty in 1904.

We spe­cu­late he may be Ri­chard Bow­en Lock­wood (1825–1913), of the New­ark, New Jer­sey, con­fer­ence of the Me­tho­dist Epis­co­pal Church, who is bur­ied in Spar­kill, New York.
