Son of Henry D. & Nancy Jane Pierce Lowing, Henry was educated at the State Normal School in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Institute for the Blind in Philadelphia. He began composing music in 1892, and taught the violin and directed church choirs. In 1897, he married Eva Belle Dunbar, who sang alto and accompanied him on piano and organ. As of 1904, he was living in Linesville, Pennsylvania.
