Biography

Jemima was the daugh­ter of Tho­mas Thomp­son, a found­er of the Brit­ish and For­eign Sail­ors’ So­cie­ty, and wife of Con­gre­ga­tion­al min­is­ter Sam­uel Luke (mar­ried circa 1833.)

She be­gan writ­ing ear­ly, be­ing first pub­lished in the Ju­ve­nile Ma­ga­zine when she was 13.

Luke had an abid­ing in­ter­est in mis­sions. From 1841–45, she ed­it­ed The Mis­sion­ary Re­po­si­to­ry. Among her friends was Ma­ry Mof­fatt, daugh­ter of mis­sion­ary James Mof­fatt, and lat­er, wife of Da­vid Liv­ing­ston.
