Jemima was the daughter of Thomas Thompson, a founder of the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society, and wife of Congregational minister Samuel Luke (married circa 1833.)
She began writing early, being first published in the Juvenile Magazine when she was 13.
Luke had an abiding interest in missions. From 1841–45, she edited The Missionary Repository. Among her friends was Mary Moffatt, daughter of missionary James Moffatt, and later, wife of David Livingston.
