William was the son of John Maccall, a tradesman, and Elizabeth Murdoch.
He earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Glasgow, then studied theology in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ordained a Unitarian minister, he pastored in Bolton, Lancashire (1837–40) and Crediton, Devonshire (1841–46), then moved to London.
