Harriet was the daugh­ter of Tho­mas Mar­ti­neau and Eli­za­beth Ran­kin, and sister of James Mar­tin­eau.

She is re­mem­bered as a writ­er, so­ci­ol­ogist and phi­lo­so­pher.
