Biography

John was the son of Is­ai­ah May­field and (pos­si­bly) Anne S. Cal­houn, and hus­band of Mar­ga­ret El­len White.

He moved to Up­shur Count­y, Tex­as, around 1854.

During the Am­er­ican ci­vil war, he served in Com­pa­ny K, 34th Tex­as Cav­al­ry, Col­o­nel Ter­rell’s Re­gi­ment.

He start­ed teach­ing and writ­ing vo­cal mu­sic at age 35, and be­came as­so­ci­at­ed with the Trio Mu­sic Com­pa­ny. As of 1907, he was liv­ing in Sha­dy Grove, Tex­as.
