John was the husband of Mary Estelle Douglass.
He studied music in the American Midwest and in Europe, then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to become the Tabernacle organist (1900–1925) and director of the Salt Lake Opera Company.
King Albert I of Belgium decorated him in appreciation for a recital played when the king and queen toured America in 1919.
