Biography

Henry was the son of John James Mc­Cook and Ca­the­rine Ju­lia Shel­don, and hus­band of Em­ma C Her­ter.

He gra­du­at­ed from Jef­fer­son College in 1859, and stu­died at West­ern Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry, Hol­land, Mi­chi­gan.

He served as an ar­my chap­lain in the Am­er­ican ci­vil war. Af­ter the war, he be­came a Pres­by­te­ri­an min­is­ter, serv­ing pas­tor­ates in Clin­ton, Il­li­nois; St. Lou­is, Mis­sou­ri; and Phi­la­del­phia, Penn­syl­van­ia.

On Co­lum­bus Day, 1892, Mc­Cook de­liv­ered the ben­e­dict­ion at ce­re­mo­nies mark­ing the World Co­lum­bi­an Ex­po­si­tion, Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois. Mc­Cook’s pray­er fol­lowed re­marks by (among oth­ers) Le­vi Par­sons Mor­ton, twen­ty-second Vice Pre­si­dent of the Unit­ed States.

During the Span­ish Am­er­ican War, McCook was chap­lain of the Se­cond Penn­syl­van­ia Re­gi­ment.

He was al­so a na­tur­al­ist, and an of­fi­cer of the Am­er­ican En­to­mo­lo­gi­cal So­cie­ty and the Am­er­ican Aca­de­my of Na­tur­al Sci­enc­es.

In 1906, 1910, and 1920, Mc­Cook was liv­ing in De­von, Penn­syl­van­ia.
