John was the son of Elizabeth A. Ginn, and husband of Mary Eliza Burt.
He was educated at Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa; Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa; and the Boston University School of Theology.
He served pastorates in Iowa, Illinois, Rhode Island, New York, and Kansas. He also served as secretary of the Board of Sunday Schools in New York City, secretary of the Sunday School Union, and editor of Sunday school materials for the Methodist Episcopal Church.
